Traditional Blessing of the Animals Service

Today’s worship is adapted from our tradition of offering an annual a blessing of the animals service. Our primary focus will be on God’s love for all living creatures. We will celebrate the way our human lives are deepened and enriched by our bond with animals – both wild and domesticated. You will hear the story of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and environment who could be viewed as the original Earth Day advocate. St. Francis cared for the poor and sick, he preached sermons to animals and praised all creatures as brothers and sisters under God. Later in the service congregants will show their pets and what they cherish about it. A virtual blessing will take place on your pets and stuffed animals.

Psalm 148:1-5, 7-13 Praise God, all you holy angels; praise God, all the heavenly host.

Genesis 1:20-25 God spoke: “Swarm, Ocean, with fish and all sea life! Birds, fly through the sky over Earth!”
